EXPLORER YACHTS: New design trends
The Explorer concept has evolved considerably in recent years, from 2004 when the foundation stone of the first true yacht explorer, the Naumachos 82' m/y Bodry built at Cantiere Navale di Pesaro was laid down.
This first explorer yacht fully represented the style and functionality of a work boat, no frills and no embellishments, a vessel born to be functional and to sail in all kinds of weather conditions.
Now that this trend is gaining ground, more and more owners are looking for robust explorer yachts with which they can sail for several weeks without touching land, but without sacrificing aesthetics.
One example is the RSY38m EXP M/YE mocean, recent winner at the World Superyacht Awards, a modern crossover with contemporary and elegant lines and all the technical features of a true explorer yacht.
Integration between design and engineering is in fact playing an increasingly important role, and this is a field in which Hydro Tec is unrivalled, being one of the few design studios in the world able to follow all aspects of design, from the blank sheet to the launch, supporting the owner in every choice.
Now more than ever people want to enjoy the sea, to set sail and explore different places, wake up every morning in a different place. People want to feel free in a sheltered place. There’s a great demand for explorer yachts that can remain in locations far from any port because they have room for plenty of fuel, food and water, and can carry all sorts of water toys and tenders. Some owners who have boarded their yacht during this pandemic have stayed at sea for 15-20 days.
The new generation of explorer yacht is usually designed with the stern open to the sea, offering a close contact with nature, and large window areas.
For instance, the two windows in the lounge of the 40-metre Aurelia, the first Flexplorer built by Cantiere delle Marche, launched in late 2020, are 2.5 metres long and its beach club is about 110 square metres when the tender is launched.
Flexibility is also a success key factor, modern yachts live through the communication between their interiors and exteriors, and that’s the only way to create striking effects.
All the outdoor areas can be transformed for use in cold climates.
Vanguard, Hydro Tec’s 25thanniversary celebratory concept, represents exactly this modern conception, offering an articulated and flexible lay-out.
The pool area can be closed off thanks to the sliding doors: this provides the opportunity to use the pool in cold as well as warm weather.
The tender area, located on the main deck, is another space adaptable to different life situations; indeed, once the tenders have been launched, it can be turned into a covered terrace, just like the helideck.
The wide spaces of this area allow you to embark many tenders and toys, a fundamental feature for an explorer yacht, born with the idea of cruising for long periods without touching land and in areas of the world poorly equipped for traditional yachts.
Sailing in search of new places is one of humankind’s ancestral drives. We specialise in this – we have taken all our experience, also from the sail yacht world, to create design objects that are also extremely practical.
